Miss Akokla Sangtam hails from Old Sangsomong village, Tuensang district, in the state of Nagaland. Life was never easy for her. At a very young age, her parents separated, and her mother single-handedly raised her and her five siblings. Despite the hardships, her mother remained a pillar of strength, ensuring that her children never felt the absence of their father.

Akokla’s elder sister, an alumna of Don Bosco Tech-AIDA, took on the responsibility of supporting the family financially, working with the Taj Group of Hotels as a Spa Supervisor. Inspired by her mother’s resilience and her sister’s dedication, Akokla was determined to stand on her own feet and contribute to her family.

After completing her 10th grade, Akokla decided to step away from formal education to help support her family. However, finding employment without any skills proved to be a challenge. It was during this time that her elder sister encouraged her to enroll in the hospitality training program at Don Bosco Tech, Rangajan, under the Skills for Dignity initiative supported by LTIMindtree Foundation.

She joined Don Bosco Tech on February 5, 2024, and initially found it difficult to adapt to the structured environment. However, with time, she embraced the learning process. Along with technical training in hospitality, she developed essential skills such as communicative English, soft skills, time management, and basic computer knowledge. The training not only enhanced her abilities but also built her confidence and adaptability.

Upon completing her training, Akokla successfully cleared her interview and secured a trainee position in housekeeping at The Crown, IHCL SeleQtions, Bhubaneshwar, Odisha. Her dedication and hard work have earned her positive feedback from her managers, and she now proudly contributes financially to her family, helping her younger siblings pursue their education.

“My sister looked after us all these years; now, it is my turn to take responsibility and support my family. I want my mother to relax, as she has worked tirelessly for us,” Akokla shares.

Her journey from uncertainty to financial independence has made her an inspiration to many young individuals in her community. She expresses her heartfelt gratitude to Don Bosco Tech Society for transforming her life and giving her the opportunity to build a better future. Akokla’s story is a testament to the power of Skill Connect—where opportunity meets determination, paving the way for a brighter tomorrow.
