Designation :
Wankmen Kharlukhi hails from Nongmynsong, an outskirt colony of Shillong. Belonging to a big family of six and stricken by poverty she struggled to find a way to earn a decent living. She lost her father when she was really young; her mother managed the family with her little earning from daily wages. When she was 12 years of age, her mother felt sick and since then her ill health & frail body didn’t allowed her to work. Her elder sister then started looking after the mother and also decided to take the burden of the complete family on her shoulders. Both of her elder brother are married and posted outside, one is a forest guard and other is a home guard thus can’t help the family in any of the way.
Till now, everything was going good; Wankmen was pursuing her class 10 from NIOS (National Institute of Open Schooling) and was also involved in the part-time work working as a maid in the rich families. But things went out of control when her sister choose to end her life leaving the family in grieve. Now the entire responsibility of the family came to her head, she had to drop her education in between and look for some good source of income to look after her ailing mother and her sister’s education. The income she used to receive as a maid was not sufficient to support the family. Difficulties prevail as she was unemployable due to lack of proper qualification and lack of knowledge.
One of these days, when she went to Bellefonte, her NIOS study center to withdraw her name, she met Sister Helen who told her about DB Tech offering BASE Training Programme at the centre located in Shillong. Without wasting time she went to meet Hospitality Trainer, Rosy Bismiter to enquire more about the programme. After knowing about the programme, the very next minute she decided to join the Hospitality domain. With each day of training, she gained confidence and developed skills in her.
Unpredictably, at the end of the training she got three employment opportunities from Land Mark Hotel, Pegasus Crown and Magnam Hotel, Shillong. Though, she could not qualify herself for the first two hotels because of their eligibility criteria. Nevertheless, she could make it for the third one i.e. Magnam Hotel. When she got selected for this job, her hopes and joys were visible on her face. She is today earning a salary of Rs. 4000/- per month with which she is not only looking after her family but also continuing her studies. It is really commendable that a girl in spite of such trouble is happily supporting her family.
