On July 22, 2024, the Don Bosco Tech Society's Nongstoin center held a significant awareness event focused on HIV/AIDS, substance abuse, and sexually transmitted infections (STIs). The event featured esteemed guests from the Meghalaya AIDS Control Society: Mr. Banshailang Kharmujai, Counselor for STI and RTI, and Madam Ilawansha Dkhar, ICTC Counselor, who brought their expertise to educate and engage with the audience.

Brother Quirinos Warkhyllew, the center's in-charge, warmly welcomed the guests and inaugurated the program with an inspiring speech. He emphasized the importance of such awareness events in today's world and acknowledged the unique characteristics of Generation Z. Brother Quirinos pointed out that this generation is particularly adept at focusing intently on various concerns and encouraged the students to absorb the program's content, not only for their benefit but also to help spread awareness within their communities.

The highlight of the event was the address by Miss Ilawansha Dkhar, who provided an in-depth discussion on HIV/AIDS. She described HIV/AIDS as a formidable illness with no current cure and elucidated the primary transmission modes: unprotected sexual contact, shared drug injection needles, breastfeeding, and blood transfusion. Miss Dkhar noted that Meghalaya has one of the highest rates of HIV/AIDS cases in India but emphasized that early identification through ART therapy can lead to effective treatment and management of the disease.

Following this, Mr. Banshailang Kharmujai spoke about the symptoms and treatments of STIs, offering valuable information on recognizing and addressing these infections. He highlighted the government's initiatives to support affected individuals by providing free tests and medical supplies. Mr. Kharmujai also introduced the Suraksha Clinic, which offers essential medication and counseling services, ensuring comprehensive support for those in need. The interactive session saw active participation from students, whose queries were adeptly addressed by the experts.

The event concluded with a heartfelt vote of thanks from Miss Vanisha Thongni, marking the end of a highly educational and engaging program. The attendees left with a renewed understanding of these critical health issues and a sense of empowerment to contribute to broader community awareness.

Overall, the event not only provided valuable insights and practical knowledge but also underscored the importance of proactive health education and community support in combating HIV/AIDS, substance abuse, and STIs.
