Manikandam, June 4, 2025 – DB Tech Manikandam recently organized an insightful guest lecture on “De-addiction Awareness and Life Skills,” led by the esteemed Rev. Fr. John Dharman SDB, a renowned psychiatrist consultant and de-addiction counselor. The session, held from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., brought together students and faculty for a transformative learning experience focused on mental health, self-empowerment, and healthy decision-making.

The event began with a warm welcome from Rev. Fr. Mathew SDB, Center In-charge of DB Tech Manikandam, who honored the Chief Guest with a traditional ponnadai as a mark of respect and appreciation.

Fr. John Dharman captivated the audience with thought-provoking insights into the perils of addiction and the importance of cultivating strong life skills. He introduced students to two practical frameworks – DARE and REAL – designed to equip young individuals with actionable strategies for navigating peer pressure and maintaining a substance-free lifestyle.

The DARE model, which stands for Define, Assess, Respond, and Evaluate, provided a structured approach for identifying risky situations and making informed choices. Fr. Dharman emphasized the value of mental preparedness, guiding students on how to respond effectively when faced with offers of cigarettes, alcohol, or other substances.

Complementing this, the REAL strategy – Refuse, Explain, Avoid, and Leave – offered a hands-on method to assertively resist temptations while preserving personal confidence and integrity. The interactive nature of the session, including reflective exercises and engaging games, encouraged students to internalize these strategies and consider practical applications in their daily lives.

Participants expressed appreciation for the session’s clarity, relevance, and the approachable way in which complex topics like addiction and peer pressure were explained. The lecture not only enhanced awareness but also inspired students to embrace personal responsibility and resilience in their choices.

The session concluded with a heartfelt vote of thanks by Mrs. Pavithara, Web Development Trainer, acknowledging Fr. John Dharman’s dedication to youth empowerment and his motivating engagement with the students. A group photo marked the conclusion of the event, capturing the enthusiasm and collective spirit of the participants.

The guest lecture at DB Tech Manikandam served as a meaningful step toward nurturing informed, confident, and resilient individuals, equipping students with essential life skills that extend far beyond the classroom.
