A guest lecture on HIV/AIDS was organised on the 13th August 2026 at BIDS Centre . The main purpose of the programme was to create awareness among students about HIV/AIDS, its transmission, prevention, treatment, and the importance of counselling.

The resource person for the programme was Miss Christy Najiar, a counsellor working at Ganesh Das Hospital, Shillong. She shared her knowledge and professional experience with the students and provided valuable information about HIV/AIDS and its impact on individuals and society.

During the lecture, Miss Christy explained the meaning of HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) and AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome). She explained that HIV attacks the immune system and, if left untreated, can lead to AIDS. She discussed the different ways through which HIV can be transmitted, including unprotected sexual contact, transfusion of infected blood, sharing contaminated needles or syringes, and transmission from an infected mother to her child.

She also emphasized the importance of HIV prevention. Students were advised to practice safe and responsible behaviour, avoid sharing needles, ensure that blood is properly screened before transfusion, and undergo HIV testing when necessary. She highlighted the importance of seeking proper medical advice and counselling.

Another important topic discussed during the lecture was stigma and discrimination. Miss Christy explained that HIV cannot be transmitted through ordinary social contact such as shaking hands, hugging, sharing food, or sitting with a person living with HIV. She encouraged students to show empathy, respect, and support towards people living with HIV/AIDS rather than discriminating against them.

The session was interactive, and students actively participated by asking questions and clearing their doubts. Miss Christy patiently answered the questions and helped the students understand the facts about HIV/AIDS while correcting common myths and misconceptions.

The guest lecture was informative, educational, and highly beneficial for the students. It increased their awareness about HIV/AIDS and taught them the importance of prevention, testing, counselling, treatment, and social support. The programme also encouraged students to develop a responsible and compassionate attitude towards people living with HIV/AIDS.

Overall, the guest lecture by Miss Christy Najiar was a valuable learning experience and successfully created greater awareness about HIV/AIDS among the students.
