A guest lecture and awareness programme on HIV/AIDS was conducted on 14th May 2026 at the Mawkasiang Centre for the Housekeeping Assistant trainees in collaboration with the Meghalaya AIDS Control Society (MACS). The programme aimed to create awareness about HIV/AIDS, its prevention, treatment, and the importance of eliminating stigma and discrimination associated with the disease. Ms. Larina Nongpiur and Mr. Soolangki John Lyndoh were the resource persons from MACS.

During the session, Ms. Larina from MACS explained the meaning of HIV and AIDS, the difference between being HIV-positive and having AIDS, and how HIV affects the immune system. They also discussed the major modes of HIV transmission, including unprotected sexual contact, sharing infected needles, infected blood transfusion, and mother-to-child transmission. At the same time, they clarified common misconceptions by explaining that HIV does not spread through casual contact such as shaking hands, hugging, or sharing food.

The speakers emphasized the importance of prevention, safe practices, regular health check-ups, and early HIV testing. Information regarding HIV/AIDS statistics in Meghalaya, available testing centres, counselling services, ICTCs, ART centres, and government support services was also shared with the trainees. The participants were encouraged to spread awareness and support people living with HIV/AIDS without discrimination.

An interactive Question and Answer session was conducted where trainees actively participated and clarified their doubts regarding HIV prevention, treatment, and awareness. To encourage participation, prizes such as bags and sweatshirts were distributed to trainees who answered questions correctly and actively engaged during the programme.

Overall, the programme was highly informative and beneficial for the trainees. It helped create awareness, correct misconceptions, and promote responsible attitudes towards HIV/AIDS. The session concluded with a vote of thanks to the MACS team for conducting the awareness programme successfully.
