On July 25, 2024, we had the distinct honor of hosting P. Lakshmi Garu, the distinguished Protection Officer Institutional Care (POIC) from Anakapalli, for a captivating guest lecture on HIV/AIDS awareness. This event was meticulously organized to enlighten and engage the Don Bosco tech trainees on the crucial aspects of HIV/AIDS, encompassing prevention, treatment, and the vital role of empathy and support for those affected by the disease.

P. Lakshmi Garu opened the session with an in-depth exploration of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS). She vividly illustrated how HIV targets and debilitates the immune system by attacking CD4 cells (T cells), thereby leaving individuals increasingly susceptible to other infections and diseases.

The lecture delved into the modes of HIV transmission, where P. Lakshmi Garu elucidated how HIV spreads through unprotected sexual contact, shared needles, transfusions of contaminated blood, and from mother to child during childbirth or breastfeeding. She dispelled common myths surrounding HIV transmission, emphasizing that it cannot be transmitted through casual contact, hugs, or sharing utensils.

In discussing prevention strategies, P. Lakshmi Garu underscored the critical importance of measures such as condom use, regular HIV testing, needle exchange programs, and antiretroviral therapy (ART) to manage and reduce viral load in those living with HIV. Her emphasis on sexual education and awareness campaigns highlighted their pivotal role in curbing the spread of the virus.

The session continued with an overview of the symptoms and stages of HIV infection, from the acute phase through clinical latency to AIDS. She detailed the symptoms associated with each stage and the necessity of early diagnosis via regular testing. P. Lakshmi Garu stressed that early intervention is key to effective management and improved quality of life for individuals affected by HIV.

In the segment on treatment and care, P. Lakshmi Garu provided a thorough explanation of antiretroviral therapy (ART) as the cornerstone of current HIV treatment. She described how ART controls the virus, prevents progression to AIDS, and mitigates transmission risks. The discussion also highlighted the importance of adherence to treatment and routine medical check-ups.

A significant portion of the lecture was devoted to the stigma and discrimination faced by those living with HIV/AIDS. P. Lakshmi Garu passionately advocated for empathy, understanding, and community support. She urged attendees to combat stigma by disseminating accurate information, supporting affected individuals, and advocating for their rights.

As a Protection Officer Institutional Care, P. Lakshmi Garu shared her personal experiences and outlined the crucial role of institutional care in supporting those impacted by HIV/AIDS. She highlighted various programs and initiatives designed to offer comprehensive medical, psychological, and social support to individuals and families.

The guest lecture was profoundly insightful and engaging, leaving attendees with a more nuanced understanding of HIV/AIDS. P. Lakshmi Garu’s expert insights and compassionate delivery effectively dispelled myths and fostered a more informed and empathetic outlook. The session concluded with a dynamic Q&A segment, allowing participants to ask questions and engage in meaningful dialogue.
