On July 18, 2024, Don Bosco Technical School hosted an enlightening awareness session on HIV, AIDS, and drug abuse, sponsored by the Meghalaya Aids Control Society, Shillong. The session featured two distinguished resource persons: Ms. Yasmine Dohling, an experienced counsellor, and Banisa Lamare, a proficient lab technician. Their presentations provided invaluable insights into these critical issues, aimed at equipping our students with essential knowledge.

Ms. Dohling and Ms. Lamare underscored the importance of recognizing the symptoms of HIV, AIDS, and drug-related illnesses. They highlighted the need for prompt medical attention and dispelled common misconceptions that often prevent young people from seeking the help they need. Ms. Dohling poignantly addressed the negative impact of drug use and related diseases on youth, noting how peer pressure and misinformation can lead to poor decision-making. She emphasized the significance of surrounding oneself with a supportive and positive peer group, which can greatly influence one's life choices.

Drawing from her extensive experience, Ms. Dohling shared compelling stories of young individuals grappling with addiction, shedding light on the challenges they face and the resilience required to overcome such struggles. She meticulously explained the four primary modes of HIV transmission: sexual contact, blood contamination, needle sharing, and from mother to infant. Her message was clear: regular health check-ups every six months are vital for maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

The session concluded with an engaging interaction between the counsellors and the students, fostering a space for open dialogue and questions. This awareness programme not only educated but also inspired our students to take proactive steps towards their health and well-being, leaving a lasting impact on all who attended.
