On the 4th and 5th of October 2024, the Food and Beverage Service Associate students from Batch 2 and Batch 3 were given an exceptional opportunity to gain practical exposure at the prestigious Courtyard by Marriott in Shillong. The event, which promised real-world experience, exceeded all expectations as students were immersed in the fast-paced world of hospitality, learning first-hand what it takes to excel in a luxury hotel setting.

The day began with a comprehensive briefing session led by the hotel’s experienced staff, where students were divided into teams and assigned specific roles. These roles ranged from serving welcome drinks to managing various aspects of the buffet service. The briefing emphasized the importance of customer interaction, professional etiquette, and seamless service, setting the tone for an enriching day ahead.

One of the key takeaways for the students was learning how to manage guest interactions, a skill critical in the hospitality industry. Students were not only tasked with ensuring customer satisfaction but also with handling real-time feedback. The positive remarks from guests delighted the students, motivating them to work even harder throughout the event.

In addition to guest service, the students were actively involved in key operational areas, such as the preparation and setup of the venue, which included arranging the bar, setting up beverages, and managing the dining areas. They also gained practical insights into important aspects of hospitality, such as plate and table clearance, ashtray maintenance, and efficient buffet management.

What made this experience truly memorable was the level of responsibility given to the students. They were entrusted with handling various duties independently, allowing them to hone their problem-solving skills under pressure. The experience also fostered teamwork and enhanced their communication abilities, two essential qualities for a successful career in hospitality.

At the conclusion of the two-day exposure, the students expressed sincere gratitude to the management team at Courtyard by Marriott, particularly the hotel manager, for offering them this invaluable opportunity. Many students remarked that the experience had not only given them practical skills but had also boosted their confidence to take on greater challenges in the hospitality world.

The event was not just a practical exercise but a glimpse into the high standards of service and operations that define luxury hospitality. As they left Courtyard by Marriott, the students carried with them newfound knowledge, enthusiasm, and a deeper understanding of their craft, eager to apply these skills as they move forward in their careers.

This insightful and hands-on experience solidified the students' resolve to pursue excellence in hospitality, setting them up for future success in an ever-evolving industry.
