Motivational and alumni interaction session
29 Jan 2026
On 29 January 2026, Don Bosco Tech, Shillong, organized a meaningful Motivational and Alumni Interaction Session for the students of Don Bosco Skill Mission (DBSM – DB Tech). The program was designed to inspire young learners, deepen their self-awareness, and prepare them mentally, emotionally, and physically for their future careers, particularly in the hospitality and Food & Beverage sector. The day brought together guidance from leadership and lived industry experience, making it both reflective and practical for the students.
The first session was led by Bro. Barnabas Khriam, Executive Director of DBSM (DB Tech), who began by inviting students to introduce themselves. This simple interaction immediately created an atmosphere of openness and trust, encouraging students to participate freely and confidently.
Bro. Barnabas spoke thoughtfully about the diverse family, social, and economic backgrounds from which the students come. He reminded them that life does not offer the same starting point to everyone. Some students grow up facing financial struggles and responsibilities at a young age, others contribute to their families through hard work at home or outside, while some may come from relatively comfortable environments. He highlighted that parental love is expressed in different ways and that every child’s experience of care and support is unique. Despite these differences, he strongly emphasized that all students share equal dignity, worth, and potential.
He then asked the students to reflect on why they chose Don Bosco Tech. While their personal reasons varied, he pointed out the shared purpose that unites them all: the desire to complete their training, become self-reliant, and build a better future. He stressed that earning a livelihood through one’s own effort brings not only financial stability but also pride, confidence, and self-respect.
A particularly engaging moment came when Bro. Barnabas posed a thought-provoking question: what truly belongs to a person? Students responded with answers such as responsibility, knowledge, health, one’s body, thoughts, ideas, and honesty. He appreciated these reflections and expanded on them with real-life examples, helping students understand the importance of self-ownership, ethical values, and personal responsibility both in life and in the workplace.
He reminded students that respect begins with one’s attitude toward work. When work is done with sincerity and commitment, it builds character and earns respect in return. He also spoke about the importance of physical fitness, especially for students training in Food and Beverage services. The profession demands stamina, strength, and long hours of standing and movement, making good health and regular exercise essential for long-term success.
The second session featured an inspiring alumni interaction with Mr. Habansankupar Suting, a DB Tech alumnus currently working in the Food and Beverage Department at Stanworth Hotel, Chennai. His presence offered students a powerful example of what dedication and perseverance can achieve.
Mr. Suting shared his journey from a DB Tech classroom to a professional hotel environment, speaking honestly about both the rewarding moments and the challenges of working in the hospitality industry. He explained that the field demands discipline, teamwork, patience, and the ability to perform under pressure. Rather than discouraging students, he encouraged them to see challenges as opportunities for growth and learning.
He also reinforced the importance of physical and mental strength, especially in the F&B sector, where the job requires continuous movement, long working hours, and consistent service excellence. Drawing from personal experience, he spoke about the emotional challenges of working away from home, including homesickness and loneliness. During such times, he advised students to remain grounded in their values, maintain good character, and stay focused on their goals.
Mr. Suting concluded by motivating students to take their training seriously, continue learning, and believe in their own potential. He reminded them that success is built step by step through commitment, humility, and continuous self-improvement.
The sessions left a lasting impression on the students. Bro. Barnabas Khriam’s motivational address encouraged deep reflection on values, responsibility, dignity, and health, while Mr. Habansankupar Suting’s alumni interaction brought real-world relevance and inspiration. Together, the program successfully reinforced the importance of discipline, self-belief, and hard work, guiding students toward a confident and purpose-driven future.
