17 Jun 2024
On June 17, 2024, Don Bosco Tech Thakurmunda inaugurated its first lecture for the Mushroom Grower job role under the 'Skills to Succeed 2024-25' program at the Thakurmunda center. This milestone event was graced by Mr. Manoj Jena, the Block Research Person (BRP) from Thakurmunda, who captivated the audience with his profound insights into mushroom cultivation.
The lecture began with a warm welcome address by both the Center Coordinator and Domain Trainer, Mr. Jagadish Prasad Swain, who introduced Mr. Manoj Jena. The anticipation was palpable as Mr. Jena took the stage, ready to share his extensive knowledge on the subject.
Mr. Jena's presentation delved into the fascinating world of mushroom cultivation in India. He began by outlining the three main types of mushrooms grown commercially in India: oyster mushrooms, paddy straw mushrooms, and button mushrooms. His emphasis on the minimal land requirement and low financial investment needed for mushroom farming caught the trainees' attention, revealing a sustainable and accessible agricultural practice.
He explained how mushroom cultivation utilizes various agricultural or forest wastes without the need for composting, making it an eco-friendly and resource-efficient process. This aspect alone makes it a revolutionary practice in the realm of sustainable agriculture. The trainees learned that mushroom farming is not just about growing fungi but transforming waste into a protein-rich food source.
One of the most intriguing parts of Mr. Jena’s lecture was his discussion on the profitability of mushroom farming in India. He illustrated how this industry has turned hard labor into lucrative profits, revolutionizing the lives of many farmers. He further elaborated on the benefits of mushroom production, such as converting agro-waste into valuable products like organic manure and nutritious food, thereby significantly reducing environmental pollution.
Mr. Jena also highlighted the empowering potential of mushroom cultivation. He spoke passionately about the opportunities it offers to both rural and urban women, enabling them to engage in cultivation, production of value-added products, and marketing. This activity, being predominantly indoor, is particularly suitable for women and provides a viable employment avenue for unemployed youth.
The lecture took an engaging turn with an interactive FAQ session where trainees posed various questions to Mr. Jena. His comprehensive answers provided deeper insights, leaving the trainees more informed and inspired.
The session concluded with Mrs. Rasmita Behera, Support Domain Trainer, extending heartfelt thanks to Mr. Jena for his invaluable contribution and for enlightening the trainees with his expertise.
Overall, the lecture by Mr. Manoj Jena was not just a talk but a gateway to new possibilities in sustainable agriculture and economic empowerment. His insights into mushroom cultivation provided the trainees with newfound knowledge and a fresh perspective on this thriving industry. The event marked a significant step forward in the 'Skills to Succeed 2024-25' program, promising a future of growth and opportunity for all involved.
